In a close, well-played battle Friday afternoon, Yale's blue-clad booters throw Harvard's Varsity soccer team down to a 2 to 0 defeat in the climax of both teams' seasons. This was the first time in four years that the Elis have topped the Carrmen.
Although both teams exhibited fancy footwork and accurate passing, Yale proved the better balanced aggregation with a rugged defense and swift forward line.
The first Yale tally was made by right outside Hoaglund while left outside Haines pounded the ball through the Harvard goal in the third quarter. Both scores were well-placed, making it impossible for goalie John Penson to prevent them. In the final period the Crimson threatened several times but Yale's steady defense prevented any score.
Spectacular for Harvard were Sophomore right outside "Horky" Hortzovtis and right fullback Captain Dave Ives. Bill Edgars played the entire fray on an injured right ankle which kept him from the Brown game last week.
The 1940 squad, despite its final defeat, finished the season with a fairly successful record of four victories, three losses, and two deadlocks. The fact that six of the starting lineup will graduate this June leaves only mild hope for improvement next season.
The Freshman soccer team defeated Yale this Saturday 3 to 0 in its final game of a successful season. Captain Thayer Drake, Haskeil Schell, and Eli Burman scored for the Yardlings.
In summarizing the season, Captain Ives expressed his disappointment that the team's potential material did not burgeon into a spectacular outfit.
