STEFANI SAYS NO STRIKES IN DINING HALLS FOR THIS YEAR

Joseph Stefani, leader of the A.F. of L.'s cooks and waitresses union in University dining halls, admitted yesterday that there would be no labor crisis this year, despite earlier threats 40 tie up the kitchen organization unless certain demands were met.

The contract which was won last year after the unions threatened to strike will be continued for another year, Stefani said. Mild protests are expected, however, over the University's practice of replacing union members with unaffiliated cooks and waitresses in certain instances.

By forcing the University to boost wage rates last year, the union was indirectly responsible for the rise in board rates for the House dining halls. Stefani denied yesterday that there was any move contemplated to injure students and said that any pay readjustments were within the limits of proper returns to the workers.
