TWO STUDENTS ESCAPE DEATH AS DECREPIT ELEVATOR FALLS

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Two undergraduates narrowly escaped death yesterday noon when the cogwheel of an elevator in the University Muscum gave way. The lift was dropped form the ground floor to the basement, while the three-foot cogwheel fell from the top of the shaft and harely missed the students who were returning to the ground floor after a Geography class.

the hand-operated elevator was put into the Muscum about 40 years ago, and was said to be the oldest in Cambridge. Considerable stain was probably placed on the cogwheel when a one-and-a-half ton meteorite was carried up on the lift last summer, Muscum officials said.

Only the fact that a substantial cross-beam extends across the open top of the elevator saved the students from death.
