ATHLETIC COUNCIL WILL DELIBERATE LETTER QUESTION

MEETING ON APRIL 8

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The move to give major letters to all swimmers competing in the Yale meet gained added impetus last night with the announcement by Frank S. Deland, Jr., adviser-secretary to the Undergraduate Athletic Council, that the group will consider the question at its next meeting, April 8.

"This question of major awards for all Yale haunters has been brought to our attention in the past, being turned down several times. The chances, however, are fairly good that the Council may look favorably on the proposed action at this time," Deland stated.

Next Step

If the undergraduate group should recommend adoption of the new system of awarding letters, the next step would be to refer the matter to the Committee on the Regulation of Athletic Sports.

Under the present set-up, the H. A. A. awards major letters only to swimmers who place in the Yale meet, while those who compete but do not place receive minor letters. Under the proposed plan, all those who swim in the Eli contest would win major awards.

Nine Victories

Agitation for the new swimming letter system-came to a head with the close of the current season. Coach Harold Ulen's team went through its schedule suffering only two defeats while winning nine encounters. Though the team was one of the nation's top-ranking swimming aggregations, only six major awards were meted out. Seven more athletes would receive major insignia under the new plan.
