Lionel S. Marks, retiring Gordon MeKay Professor of Mechanical Engineering, was guest of honor last night at a testimonial dinner in Adams House, tendered him by the Harvard Engineering Society. Professor Marks, whose term ends September 1, will have completed 46 years of teaching at the University.
Not only a distinguished scientist, he has long been an active mountain climber and traveller, and became an intimate on such figures as Thomas Hardy. John Masecfield, and Julian Huxley.
His publications include the Mechanical Engineer's Guidebook, and a volume on airplane engines, published after his work during the war. One of the most important accomplishments at that time was to increase the celling of the Liberty engines, which was a great help to the Allies.
