"Whether we win or lose this war depends on abandoning old concepts of empire," according to Miss Jennie Lee, Laborite member of Parliament who is about to return to England after a three-months' tour of this country, studying production and labor problems.

"One of the most interesting things to see," remarked Miss Lee, "was a development in American trade unions which went beyond wage negotiations and labor conditions to a consideration of problems of production and control, under Phil Murray and young men like Walter Reuther, who have made themselves production experts in key defense industries."

"I'm interested very much in these American problems," she continued, "because there's got to be a great deal more industrial democracy in both this country and ours before we can hope to maximize our defense production.

"But in addition to being a stark military necessity, it's also a way forward to a great dignity and more secure status and recognition for working people. If this war means anything at all, it means broadening our concept of democracy to include men having an understanding and some control of their workaday lives."

Miss Lee emphasized that "young Americans must remember that the ideas they bring are as important as guns and courage. They have bravery and courage too, but we need ideas."

The material that she has collected is to go into the preparation of a book on America which will be sequel to her best-selling pamphlet, "Russia Our Ally." "Our people are desperately interested in Russia and America," she observed, "because we're now each other's lifeline."
