April 5 Starting Date Set For Grid Practice

Lamar, Stahl, Brown Lead Depleted Team

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

It won't be the spring football of the good old days, but there will be pigskins floating around Soldiers Field after April 5. A preliminary meeting for all candidates will be held in the Varsity Club at 7:30 o'clock next Thursday.

No longer a means toward a successful autumn campaign, this year's spring work is a definite end in itself-a sport for those who want to play it. If the turnout is large enough, as many teams as possible will be formed for intra-squad games, and perhaps a round-robin league.

Three Coaches Remain

Although head man Dick Harlow and line coach Lyal Clark have accepted Navy Carolina, a three-man nucleus consisting of Henry Lamar, Floyd Stahl, and Earl Brown remains from the regular coaching staff.

The playing ranks have been similarly depleted. Aside from the '43 men who would not be out in normal times, captain-elect C Cleo O'Donnell, Jack Fisher, Charley Gudaitis, Pete Garland, Jack Comeford, Leo Flynn, Dick Andersen and Len Cummings are left.

Naval reserves and Mil Sci have left a number of lettermen, however, and they will be jointed by men from Jayvee and House squads. The men with Varsity experience include the regular backfield of Don Richards, Wayne Johnson, Bill Wilson and Swede Anderson, plus George Hibbard, Wally Flynn, Sid Smith, Paul Perkins, Tom Cowen, Dana Dudley, and Willo Fisher if Jaakko Mikkola can spare him.
