Yardlings Work Winged-T In Test of Varsity Defenses

By William S. Fairfield

Darkness called a hall to the proceedings for the first time this year, as the Varsity football squad yesterday continued its polishing-up process for next Saturday's Boston University game.

Main features of the three and a half hour session were a long passing drill, defensive scrimmage against a Freshman unit using Terrier plays, and timing on offensive formations against dummies.

With Jim Kenary, Chip Gannon, Leo Flynn, and Chuck Roche alternating on the pitching end, the Crimson aerial tactics were only moderately successful. Jim Noonan contributed the most sparkling catch of the afternoon, a one-handed stab without breaking his stride.

Freshmen Use Winged-T

Crimson A and B squads spent a full hour trying out various defenses against a Yardling eleven which operated from Buff Donelli's winged-T formation. Severa! sizable gains, two for apparent touchdowns, indicated the need for more practice against Boston University plays.

End Bob Kennedy was injured during the scrimmage and his availability next Saturday is doubtful. Another end, Walt Coulson, yesterday learned that his "bad" finger, obtained against Western Maryland, was broken. However, he will probably be able to play Saturday. Fortunately, one of the Crimson's strongest positions, in the point of reserves, is at end.

Margarita Quarterbacks

Backfield Coach Bob Margarita worked under the center for the Freshman team and was shown considerable respect by the charging Varsity linemen as he escaped the fray unscathed and practically untouched.

Conditioning remains on the the focal points of this week's work-outs, since Coach Dick Harlow will not be able to rest his first-string aggregation against Boston University as he did last week against the Green Terrors.

In running through defensive maneuvers against dummies, the Varsity A squad lined up as follows: le, Red Hill; lt, Howie Houston; lg, Jim Feinberg; c, Chuck Glynn; rg, Emil Drvaric; rt, Chot Pierce; re, Wally Flynn; qb, Jim Kenary; lhb, Chuck Rocho; rhb, Chip Gannon; fb, Vince Moravec.
