‘The Architect of the Whole Plan’: Harvard Law Graduate Ken Chesebro’s Path to Jan. 6
The brilliant open field running of fullback Dune Mauran and the circus-catches of wingback Rick Hudner set up all four touchdowns yesterday as Ben McCabe's JV football team swarmed all over a bigger Yale squad to score a smashing upset victory, 27-6. Yale's lone touchdown came in the last second of play.
But despite brilliant individual performances, the outstanding feature of the game was the rugged lineplay of the Crimson defensive unit. Yale backs failed to make one long run. The only question in doubt was whether the jayvee attack could ring up a touchdown. It did--four times.
Mauran Scores First
After a quarter of inconclusive combat in the center of the field, jayvee tailback Dave Warden tossed a 30-yard pass which Rick Hudner grabbed under the eyes of two Yale halfbacks and took out of bounds on the one-yard line. Dune Mauran plowed over for the first score on the next play. Bill Rosenau missed the point, and at the end of the half the Crimson led, 6 to 0.
Mauran broke the back of any concerted Eli opposition on the first play of the second half when behind good blocking, he spun and tore his way through the whole Yale team 80 yards for a touchdown. Rosenau added the point and made it 13-0.
Warden Keeps Up the Pace
Mauran broke loose again ten plays later, as he went 40 more yards on a weak side buck before being hauled down on the two. On the next play as eight Yalies flattened Mauran, Dave Warden swept around end untouched for the marker. Rosenau added another point.
The final Crimson score came on a second circus catch by Hudner as he snared a pass which the defending halfback batted into the air. This time Chris Lindsay scored the point.
Only in the last period's desperation passing attack could the Elis move the ball, and they finally scored on a one yard buck by their captain, Al Test.
