Six Liberal Union members yesterday branded as "forgery" a letter to Walter Winchell pledging the HLU to a "Palestine for the Arabs" movement.
Winchell received the letter two weeks ago, but referred it to his Boston agent when he became suspicious of the typewritten signatures. The names given were those of former president Frederic D. Houghteling '50, Richard G. Neisser '50, Eliot G. Gordon '47, Bernard P. Cohen '51, Donald M. Glsh '56, and Alexander J. Meigs '48.
All denied ever having seen the letter and termed it a "definite attempt at smearing."
"We have organized the 'Palestine for Arabs' movement," the letter said. "Our intention is to recruit volunteers to join the 'Franklin D. Roosevelt Legion' to fight in Palestine and protect that land for its rightful owners, the Arabs.
"As a follower of our great late president, you will understand why we have named it the FDR Legion. Mr. Roosevelt would have believed in and given his support to our movement."
