Over 100 Freshmen Report For First Football Workout

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Henry Lamar wasn't kidding when he predicted a big turnout for his opening Freshman football practice. He was greeted by over a hundred prospective squad members who turned out for the first full-dress session yesterday.

Handicapped by the fact that each year he has to sort a completely unknown set of candidates into a starting eleven in less than two weeks. Lamar and his sides spent the afternoon working their squad through fundamental drills in general defenses, blocking, passing, and kicking, oral defenses.

But Lamar has plenty to choose from, since line and backfield positions seem well stocked with strong candidates. Lamar himself spent the first half of the drill working with the guards and tackles, while Vice Moravec handles the ends and Paul Lazzaro helped with the backs.

Some Face Varsity

Later on, eleven candidates, those who had completed their physical exams, got their first taste of college ball, in an hour-long workout against the Varsity.

Although this year's roster lists no outstanding prep or high school gridders, Lamar couldn't help but be impressed with today's showing. "The current squad is one of the best I've ever had," he said.
