Bunnies Beat Eliot, Dunster Tops Kirkland in Basketball

By Jack Spratte

The intramural world received no major shocks yesterday. Dunster beat Kirkland, 36 to 26, and Leverett beat previously undefeated Eliot, 34 to 29, in A League basketball; the Squash League resumed play after its vacation layoff; and the gallant hockey players prepared for their first dawn practice of the pre-exam season today.

The smooth Dunster team, forced to play an outside game by the height and general proficiency of Kirkland's John Lombard and Pat McCormick, shot and passed with accuracy, and then broke the Deacon spirit with a flurry of fast breaks. Leading scorer for Dunster was Jack Norman with 11 points, as John Brunsman concentrated on rebounds. Lombard led Kirkland with eight.

It was Dunster's third win, and Kirkland's second loss.

Eliot Loses

In the nightcap at the Blockhouse, Leverett's well-organized squad handily whipped an Eliot group that had all the coordination of a nine-months-old elephant. The game resolved into a struggle between the tall men of the teams, Dave Belcher of the Bunnies and Bob Crichton of Eliot. Between them they monopolized the backboards; Belcher scored 12 points and Crichton got 18. Leverett led all the way, showing superiority in shooting, particularly the sets of Jim Ross (8 points), passing, speed, and particularly in teamwork. It was Eliot's first loss, to three wins, and Leverett's first win.

B Basketball

In B League basketball Leverett topped Eliot 32 to 22. Kirkland, using its reserves down to the D team, beat Dunster 31 to 25, and Winthrop had a field day against Lowell, ending up with the scorers in exhaustion and a score of 45 to 18.

Winthrop walloped Adams, 4 to 1. Dunster did likewise to Eliot, and Kirkland edged Leverett, 3 to 2, in A League squash. Winthrop won too, in the B League, topping Adams, 3 to 2, while Leverett beat Kirkland, 3 to 2.
