Lowell's Musicians Resume, Will Present Handel Opera

Revival of the long-dormant Lowell House Musical Society was announced last night by Bradford F. Herzog '50, president of the newly reorganized group.

Herzog disclosed that Handel's opera "Acis and Galatea" will be presented in the Lowell Dining Hall during the week of March 13. Production will begin next term.

The Society, originally organized in 1932 by members of Lowell for the purpose of presenting chamber music concerts in the House, moved into the operating field in 1938.

Long History

From that year until 1942, when the war caused abandonment of the Society, the organization produced "Acts and Galatea," Purcell's "Dido and Aneas" and "King Arthur," Dr. John Blow's "Venus and Adonis," and in 1942, the world premier of "Solomon and Balkis" by Randall Thompson '20, professor of Music.

Malcolm H. Holmes '28, director of the University band and Dean of the New England Conservatory of Music, will conduct the orchestra. Thomas Phillips of the Longy School of Music has been named director, while Richard F. French '37, assistant professor of Music, will direct the chorus.

This year's production will have a cast of approximately 100 persons, Herzog said last night. Nucleus of this cast will come from Lowell House, but other members of the University--including Radcliffe students--will participate.

Solo Tryouts Tonight

There are parts for 14 women.

Auditions for solo parts in the coming production will be held tonight at 8 p.m. in the Lowell House music room. Chorus tryouts are set for Thursday and Friday at the same time and place.

In addition to Herzog, tentative organization of the Society includes J. Russell Hunter '49, who has been named manager-treasurer. A vice-president has not yet been selected.
