Allston Burr, Noted Alumnus And Radcliffe Trustee, Dies

Allston Burr '89, recognized as one of Harvard's most devoted alumni, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at his home in Newton. He was 83 years old.

Burr was President of the Alumni Association in 1929, Overseer for the term 1931-37, and a member of the Radcliffe Council and the Board of Trustees.

From 1926 to 1931 he headed the alumni committee which raised more than $800,000 to build Memorial Church, Harvard's World War I memorial. In addition, he served as treasurer for his class, agent for the Harvard Fund, and a trustee of Phillips Brooks House Association.

The University awarded him an honorary A.M. degree in 1931 with the citation, "A tried friend to his University, a benefactor, generous and retiring." In 1942 he received the third Alumni Association Medal for outstanding service to Harvard.

Active for many years in social service work in Boston, Burr was also a Trustee of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Athenaeum. He was a director of the investment firm of Coffin and Burr, Inc.
