Faculty Members Hit Dismissal of 'Red' Professors

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Three members of the faculty of the University of Washington have been dismissed and three more placed on probation because of participation in Communist or Communist inspired activities, it was revealed yesterday.

A group of Harvard professors, including Howard Mumford Jones, Kirtley Mather, and Harlow Shapley had previously written a public letter supporting the position of Ralph H. Gundlach, associate professor of Psychology, one of the dismissed teachers.

The two other discharged professors, Herbert J. Phillips and Joseph Butterworth, admitted Communist Party membership. Gundlach's position was "you can't prove I am and I can't prove I am not."

All three of their faculty members who were placed on two year probation admitted former membership in the Communist Party but proved their subsequent disavowals. They had to sign non-Communist affidavits.

The other three will appeal to the American Association of University Professors.
