Trackmen Gain Seconds at Meet

Second place was the fate of all Crimson entries in the 23rd annual Kinights of Columbus track meet at the Boston Garden Sunday afternoon.

Pat McCormick took his second in the 45 yard high hurdles, Harvey Thayer and Jonathan Spivak got theirs in separate 50 yard dash heats, Peter Harwood tied for a second in the pole vault, and both the freshman and varsity mile relay teams were runners-up.

The freshman one mile relay team provided the 10,724 spectators with one of the biggest thrills of the day with their neck and neck race with Yale. Tom McGrath led off, ran a steady race, and passed the stick to John Packard who lost ground to Yale's Ellinger. Rounie Berman then narrowed the Elis' margin to 3 yards. Anchor man Eddie Grutsner made a gallant try for the lead but Yale's Brown finished with a 1 1/2 yard advantage. The winning time was 329.9 with Dartmouth in 3rd place. Berman noted that inexperience in competition seemed to be what hurt the '52 runners most.

Burt Brown, Al Ruby, Pat McCormick, and Harvey Thayer made the one mile relay effort for the varsity in which they finished being Northeastern. The injury of Dave Hamblett was a severe handicap to the Crimson cause in this race.
