Varsity, '53 Harriers Beaten By R. I.; Holy Cross is Third

Although outclassed by Rhode Island's almost legendary cross-country team, Jaakko Mikkola's distance runners yesterday succeeded in finishing ahead of Holy Cross in a triangular meet at Franklin Park. The final score: Rhode Island, 24; Harvard, 51; Holy Cross, 58.

Don Black paced the winning Rhode Islanders by crossing the finish line in 21.39:8 minutes. First to finish for Harvard was Dave Gregory, last year's freshman captain. Gregory, who was also the Crimson's first finisher against Tufts last Saturday, came in fourth behind two Rhode Island and one Holy Cross runners.

Joe Leeming, who injured his heel in practice and was not able to compete against Tufts, remained out of action in yesterday's meet. Dave Cairns was second for Harvard, finishing ninth.

Freshmen Finish in Same Order

The freshman race paralleled the varsity contest, with Rhode Island winning, Harvard placing second, and Holy Cross ending up third. The R. I. freshmen scored 20 points to Harvard's 40 and Holy Cross's 75.

Paul Judy, newly-elected Freshman captain, placed third in the race, first for Harvard. Arlon Adams was the second Crimson finisher, coming in fifth after Judy and three Rhode Island harriers.
