Brown Soccer Squad Beats Crimson, 1-0, On Free Kick

Bruins Register Lone Marker on Penalty

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A first-period penalty shot cancelled out varsity hopes for an end-season sweep of its soccer games when Brown boat Harvard, 1 to 0, at Providence yesterday.

The game, like the Princeton contest last week, was even and scoreless almost all the way. But a 16:30 of the first quarter, the Bruins Dave Michael was awarded a free kick in the Crimson penalty zone. The kick, as in the case of most penalty tries, was good.

During the rest of the gams both teams had ample scoring opportunity, and plenty of shots were taken, Brown perhaps taking more than the varsity. But both goalies Harvard's Whoop Batchelder and Brown's Bob Scheffer--were at their best. Scheffer was especially unbeatable in the fourth period, when the Crimson dominated the quarter in an unsuccessful rally attempt.

Halfbacks Star

Center halfbacks on both teams were the stars. For Harvard, Rick Drake hustled and passed will, while for Brown, Michael (who scored the penalty kick) kept Crimson goalie Batchelder busy all afternoon with shots that might have been goals.

The Crimson lineups: Batchelder, g; Scully, lfb; Harrop, rfb; Miller, lhb; Drake, chb; Panteleoni, rhb; Wolf, ol; Spivak, il; Beil and Drehmel, cf; Weiss, lr; Goldstein, or.

The Brown lineups; Scheffer, g; Groth, lfb; Green rfb; Kruger, lhb; D. Michael, chb; Scott, rhb; Leach, ol; Bartunek, il; J. Michael, cf; Silva, ir; Wieboldt, or.
