Jansen Says Underling Misrepresented Policy

HYRC Head Denies Statements That Club Has New England Vassal System of Control

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Jay E. Jansen '50, president of the Young Republican Club, last night denied he said that the HYRC has seized control of the Massachusetts Young Republican Council by setting up a series of vassal clubs in other colleges.

The statement in question was attributed to Jansen by Donald F. McNell had been delegated by the committee to release publicity on the Republican youth movement in the state and on the HYRC's role in it.

"Unqualified and Incompetent"

When he saw the story that appeared in yesterday's CRIMSON, McNell said, "This is exactly what we need to show Harvard students that the HYRC is really doing something." He labeled the story correct.

Jansen last night said, "McNell was unqualified and incompetent to make those statements."

However, McNell and Jansen discussed Sunday night the general nature of what McNell had said in the name of Jansen and the HYRC and then jointly authorized publication of those statements.

In last night's denial, Jansen maintained that, "I would never say such things because I do not believe them." He said the HYRC is in a strong position

in the Massachusetts Council but in no way control it. He cited a case where the club's policy had been opposed by other college delegations.

Thomas W. Gibbs, president of the Amherst YRC, one of the organizations cited in the original statement, said last night, "We are a satellite in that Harvard organized us, but we have our own club, and we are not dictated to by Harvard as to our delegates' votes.
