"The Vital Center," a new book by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. '38, associate professor of History, will be the basis of an Adams House forum at 7:45 p.m. tonight in the Lower Common Room.
The book sets forth the author's theories on a possible area of agreement between moderate liberal and moderate conservative opinions. Schlesinger will defend his work in person.
Representatives of the left and right points of view will examine the importance and plausibility of the book. H. Stuart Hughes, Ph.D. '40, assistant professor of History, will discuss Schlesinger's work from the liberal side. The conservative view will be expressed by John W. Welcker, associate professor of Business Administration at the Business School.
After Hughes and Welcker have expressed their opinions, Schlesinger will have an opportunity to explain his stand. The discussion will be moderated by Edwin O. Reischauer, Ph.D. '39, associate professor of Far Eastern Languages.
