Varsity Cagers to Play in Washington; Yardlings Topple Tech Freshmen, 64-59

With a three-and-one record under its belt, the varsity basketball squad headed South last night for its first away game. Norm Shepard's quintet faces Georgetown University today in Washington.

For the basketball squad's first game against the Hoyas, Shepard has cut his squad to a flying squadron of ten men. His road crew comprises the customary starting five--John Rockwell, Ed Smith, Jim Gabler, Gerry Murphy and Bill Hickey--plus Bill Prior, Cliff Crosby, Dick Covey, John Stevenson, and Quent Stiles.

Rockwell and Smith have paced the team's scoring so far this year, racking up 159 out of its total of 275 points. They have been averaging just under 20 points per game. Shepard has somewhat revised his pre-season plans for fast-break ball to capitalize on their skill under the boards; his strategy worked nicely last Tuesday when the varsity beat a swift BC quintet by forcing it to play a close, deliberate game.

The Hoyas wound up with a 9 and 16 record last year, but Shepard thinks they may be considerably improved. The nearest Harvard has come to playing Georgetown was last winter, when the teams held up both ends of a Boston double bill.

After this game, the varsity stays away from home until after New Year's. Its next game is with Springfield on Tuesday, followed by a western trip at the end of Christmas vacation.
