Jaakko Mikkola's track team will be aiming for third place behind Army and Yale in today's second annual Heptagonal Meet at Briggs Cage and the Garden. Mikkola has acknowledged the might of the Cadets and Elis, but said a couple of days ago that the Crimson may pull some surprises on some of the other seven teams in the meet.
The varsity finished fourth last winter, trailing Army, Yale, and Columbia. The Heptagonal now has ten teams, and each of them boasts at least a couple of outstanding athletes. Cornell's Bob Mealey, for instance, will probably win his speciality, the 1000-yard dash, and Penn's two-mile relay team is a strong favorite.
Yale's Jim Fuchs should win the shot and may also wind up first in the dash. George Wade, another Yale man, took the IC4-A mile in 4:13, which will be pretty hard for anyone to beat today, although Princeton's Ronald Wittreich ought to press him. Dartmouth looks good for the cross country, with the 1948 champion, Stan Waterman, and Penn's Jeff Kirk, a member of last year's Olympic team, will probably set the pace over the hurdles.
