Barclay Ousted as Coach

Bill Barclay will not have his contract renewed when it runs out early in July, Director of Athletics William J. Bingham '16 announced yesterday. No successor was named at the time.

Barclay came to Cambridge as a 30-year old head basketball coach in 1916 and enjoyed a fairly successful season in his first year here. Saul Mariaschin paced the Crimson to a 19-6 won-lost record that year, but in the next two seasons Barclay was unable to hit on a winning combination.

Crimson Faltered in '47-'48

In the last two seasons, Harvard won only eight out of 40 games, winning five in 1947 and three in 1948 while losing 20 games in both campaigns. Only one of those eight victories was over an Eastern Intercollegiate opponent. In the season recently completed, the Crimson dropped 18 straight and finished in the League cellar.

A former Michigan amateur golf champion, Barclay is the professional at the Salem Country Club and also coaches the Harvard links team.

In addition to his basketball and golf duties, Barclay scouted several Harvard opponents for football coach Art Valpey last fall. Barclay, who was assisted by Lloyd Harper in coaching the basketball team, was unavailable for comment after Bingham's announcement.
