Bellboy, Elephant Nines Score Wins As Season Opens

House athletes kicked the dust off their feet yesterday and stepped into the 1949 spring season as Eliot defeated Dunster, 7 to 4, and Lowell edged Dudley, 3 to 2, in baseball.

Eliot, next to best ball club last year, fielded a smooth-running team led by pitcher Hugh Whitman. Although outfit 6 to 4 by Duster, the Elephants pulled some fancy base stealing to break a 4 to 4 tie in the second and glide on easily to victory.

The Lowell nine also won its game despite being outhit by the losers, 8 to 6. Tight fielding kept the score tied 2 to 2 going into the final frame, but them the Bellboys filled the bases and a walk drawn by Fred Glimp gave the game to Lowell.

Left fielder Bob Capaccio and third baseman Harry McKean were heavy hitters for the Bellboys, each safe tying two out of three, Frank Lionette pitched for Lowell.

In softball Kirkland boat Adams, 7 to 5, and Leverett crept by Winthrop, 6 to 5.

Kirkland defeated Adams, 3 to 2, and Dunster outlasted Lowell, 4 to 0 in the first House tennis matches of the year.
