AVC Awards $850 in Scholarships

Three scholarships, worth a total of $850, have been awarded by the Harvard chapter of the American Veterans Committee to natives of the Far East who will study at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences next year, Roy F. Gootenberg '49, chairman of the AVC, announced last night.

According to the stipulations of the AVC grant, made in memory of the late Brigadier General Evans Carlson, the scholarship recipients must return to the Orient to work for the "regeneration of Asia."

The three winners, chosen by a faculty committee headed by Payson S. Wild, Jr. '30, Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, are:

Nicholas Nich of China. Nich received his undergraduate training at Earlham College, Richmond, Indians, and intends to study international relations at Harvard.

Ching-Luu-Chao of China. Ching, a graduate of Chinese University and Vanderbilt University, will study economics.

Subimal Mookerjee 1G of India. Mookerjee is a student of economics.

The AVC will run a film series during the summer session to raise money for future scholarships.

A substantial part of the funds for this year's grant was raised by an AVC dance given early in May.

The $850 will be partioned among the three students according to need.
