Swimmers Sweep Penn Meet, 58-17; '53 Wins

Crimson Loses Only Dive; Steinhart Stars; Freshmen Beat Brookline High, 55-20

By Andrew E. Norman

Nobody expected Pennsylvania to give the varsity swimming team much of a scare. It didn't. The Crimson won easily, 58 to 17, in the Blockhouse Saturday night, taking both relays and placing twice in every other event. Penn won only the dive.

After easily beating Brookline High School, 55 to 20, in the preliminary meet, the freshman squad elected as captain for the remainder of the season David Leigh Hedberg of Worcester and Holworthy Hall. He was captain of the Exeter swimmers in his junior year there.

Steinhart, Fox Shine

Top performers for the varsity were backstroker John Steinhart and freestylers Captain Joe Fox, Bob Tolf, and Doug Kinney.

Steinhart opened the meet by putting the 300-yard medley relay well out of Penn's reach, and finished by coming within one second of the 1:37.3 Harvard record in the 150-yard backstroke.

Fox, as usual, captured both the 50-and 100-yard freestyle sprints. Kinney finished second in the 220 and 440, and it took a fine last minute drive by Tolf to edge him in the latter event. The two had been swimming side by side for about 300 yards before Kinney took a short-lived three-yard lead.

Frazier Wins Dive

Penn's George Frazier refrained from discrediting Crimson Coach Hal Ulen's pre-meet description as the top diver in the East. He amassed 110.1 points with a series of spectacularly executed plunges to Win Briggs's 99.6 and Gordie Weir's 96.3.
