Soccer Team Tips Tufts, 3-0, in Opener; Berger, Engstrom Pace Crimson Scoring

Key Injuries Fail to Hinder Booters

An inspired opening drive in the first quarter enabled Brace Munor's soccer team to gain a 3 to 0 victory over Tufts Saturday afternoon on the Bosiness School Field. Two quick scores by converted right wing Latsi Berger within the first eight minutes of play gave the Crimson a comfortable margin which it held until halfway through the final period, when another converted right wing, Bill Engstrom, ran the third one into the nets.

Injuries to Pants Pantaleoni and Ben Goldstein were expected to hamper the team, but the squad showed unexpected depth in filling the holes; it was only Indian summer heat that caused the crisp passing attack to wilt in the latter part of the game.

Weiss Returns to Lineup

All three scores came from the newly-plugged right wing gap as Berger, moved up the day before from his right halfback position, played an outstanding first half. Charlie Wiess, his knee injury recovered, came back to make the center of the forward line what it was in pre-season practice--the core of a powerful attack.

Weiss, Jim Johnson, and Captain Ted Wolf set up several fine scoring thrusts which would have run up the score but for the fine defensive play of Thompson, Tufts sophomore center halfback and candidate for All-American honors.

Depth was most evident in the halfback line, where veteran Dick Miller's aggressive tackling and cool passing keynoted the Crimson opening drive. Bob Harding, playing center half for the first time in two years, took over the inured Pantaleoni's old position and played a beautiful defensive game for three periods.

Sophomore Ben Florin came in at center half in the final stanza and did an equality fine job. Few Jumbe thrusts came through the right side as Larry Leonard and Dana Getchell alternated at right half, both making their tackles hard and sure.

Sophomore Fullbacks Show Promise

The sophomore fullback combination of Florin and Charlie Ufford showed great promise for the future, while goalie Dick Craven played an outstanding game, setting up the defense and making difficulty saves as he split the net-minding duties with Don Harshman.

Coach Bruce Munro commented last night, "In general, I was really pleased with everyone's showing Saturday, especially in the way people fille din for injured players. However, we will have to improve this week if we want to beat Haverford next Saturday."
