Yale Lettermen Elect Bob Spears To Captain 1951 Eli Football Team

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Yale's varsity football lettermen yesterday unanimously elected as 1951 captain their 195-pound fullback and line-backer, Robert Spears, of Ypsilanti, Michigan. Earlier in the day, Robert A. Hall, chairman of the Board of Athletic Control, released a '51 schedule which adds Bates, Navy, and Colgate.

Spears was outstanding as a freshman, but two knee injuries hold him back last year. An operation last December enabled him to reach full effectiveness this season. Spears, son of a former coach and All-American, was a football, basketball, and track star at Staunton Military Academy. He has since dropped basketball but is a weight man on the Yale track squad.

Spears was probably the outstanding factor in a successful Yale season.

Bates, Navy, and Colgate-all of whom have met Yale before-replace Connecticut, Fordham, and Holy Cross on the Eli schedule.
