Debaters Face English Team

Walter C. Carrington '53 and Jay R. Nussbaum '52 of the Debate Council will argue the negative of the topic: "Resolved: Democratic Socialism's the most effective barrier against Communism" against the Combined British Universities Debate Team at 8 p.m. tonight in the New Lecture Hall.

Alwyn Smith of the University of Birmingham, England and Gwynn Williams of the University College of North Wales will handle the affirmative.

Tonight's contest will be Harvard's fifth international debate since the war. The Americans won their first victory of the series in March, 1949, when they argued the negative of the question: "Was the American Revolution a Mistake!"

The Debate Council is the current Ivy League champion, and holds the New York-New England Regional Championship. The British team has been showers in a nation-wide contest to debate colleges throughout the United States, and has just completed a tour of the Mid-west.
