Freshmen dormitories may now hold individual dances in the Union. Permission was granted last Saturday after an appeal had been made to the Union Committee by Massachusetts Hall, which held the first dance there the same night. Last year no such accommodations were available.
The committee is campaigning to have Lamont Library remain open on Sundays. It meets with Phillip J. McNiff, assistant librarian in charge of Lamont, tonight to see what arrangements can be made, Dean Leighton has said that the idea is acceptable if the financial problems can be worked out satisfactorily.
Funds for a permanent mahogany plaque to be set up in the Union were appropriated at a committee meeting last week. The winning Hall in intramural athletics will be inscribed on it each year.
This year, also for the first time, the Union committee will have a representative on the Smoker Committee, election for which will be held this Friday. "The idea," said Daniel Ritchie '54, chairman of the committee, "is to put our resources at the disposal of the more limited Smoker Committee."
As part of their program to provide the freshmen with more free entertainment, the group has invited the Dunster Dunces to give a 40-minute concert in the Union Thursday. The usual Christmas festivities, which include the traditional reading of Dickens' "Christmas Carol" by Howard Mumford Jones, professor of English, takes place Monday.
And at least one freshman dormitory is keeping the Yuletide spirit. Stoughton Hall has decorated the front of its building by placing red and blue paper in all the windows, spelling out "Merry Christmas."
