To the Editors of the CRIMSON:

We on Ithaca's Ony Morning Newspaper High Above Cayuga's Pure Waters are in a state of moral frustration. We had hardly considered ourselves the essence of virgin innocence, but we did believe that we recognized the depths of sin when it smacked us in the face.

Up until this morning that is.

At that time our modest publication carried an item noting that the editors of the Harvard "Lampoon" were indicted on--and we quote--selling and distributing obscene pamphlets--disquote. The obscene pamphlet is the October issue of that hallowed humor magazine.

Now, it so happens this observer, thanks to the utmost kindness of a Harvard brethren, has a copy of that magazine and, here's where the frustration comes in, we can't see what's so damn sexually illicit about it.

Sure, they printed some--you should parden the expression--dirty cartoons that had previously been published in other college publications.

If the cartoons were okayed when printed singly, why should the Middlesex grand jury be so hot about it all? The U. S. Post Office Department, which wouldn't let Varga travel their routes, didn't care.

Maybe we in this pure and raticed four and one-half to one educational (co, that is) institution are just uninformed on life, but we can't see all the fuss being raised about them. We felt that "The Pontoon" was funny in places, flat in places, period.

And, besides, what fraternity house has sheep on the front lawn anyway? Jim Gash, Cornell '52   Cornell Daily Sun
