George Woodbury, former Harvard anthropologist, yesterday reported "very satisfactory response" to an appeal for donations towards a $20,000 fund for Dr. Hermann N. Sander. The fund is being collected in order to allay the trial expenses of Dr. Sander, who has been charged with "mercy murder."
"The fund has no relation to euthanasia or any of the other issues or the outcome of the trial," Woodbury said. "He helped me when I was in trouble, and I want to help him."
He described contributions as ranging from "small to fairly large sums," but refused to say how much has been collected to date.
Sander's trial in Manchester, New Hampshire, enters its second week today, with a detailed study of the last living minutes of Mrs. Abbie C. Borroto on the schedule. Sander has admitted injecting air into Mrs. Borroto's veins. The defense Friday began its attempt to prove she died of cancer a few minutes before the injection.
