15 Groups Offer New Rules; Council Men Ask Revisions

Meeting Blasts Code; Organizations Draft 6 Substitute Rules

Fifteen organizations unanimously protested the 33-page "Rules for Undergraduate Organizations" now being considered by the Student Council and framed a general, simple six-rule set to take its place.

The new set will be presented to the Student Council at its regular meeting tonight George J. Feeney '50 said that any other organizations that want to sign the newly framed rules should contact him in the Yearbook Publications office at Holyoke House.

Six Substitutes

Following a protest against the rules now being considered by the Council, the petition states the six substitute provisions as follows:

1) All financial responsibility for any organization rests completely with the organization itself.

2) No organization... may act in such a manner as to jeopardize the University's tax exempt status.

3) No organization... may be controlled by individuals or agencies outside the University. The criterion to be used shall be that the policy of the organization shall be made by members of the organization who are also members of the University.

4) All organizations shall uphold local, state, and federal laws.

5) No organization may imply that its actions or opinions are sponsored by Harvard University.

6) The Dean's Office shall extend recognition to any organization showing evidence of being able to carry out the above rules.

Groups that signed the petition were: 314, Debate Council, Verein Turmwachter, Photo Society, CRIMSON, Free Enterprise Society, World Federalists, Radio Network, Pre-Medical Society, Hasty Pudding Theatricals, Chemical Society, Ivy Films, Liberal Union, Advocate, and Appleton Club.
