Gen. Romulo Named to Get LL.D. Degree

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

General Carlos P. Romulo, president of the United Nations General Assembly and Philippine Foreign Secretary, will receive an honorary degree at Commencement Thursday morning.

Along with Secretary of State Dean Acheson, who will also receive an honorary degree as Doctor of Laws at the morning exercises, General Romulo will speak before the annual Alumni Association meeting in the Tercentenary Theatre Thursday afternoon.

General Romulo, who is currently one of the foremost statesmen of the Far East, served as aide to General Douglas MacArthur throughout World War II.

On June 12 the University of Rochester awarded Romulo an honorary degree at its centenary commencement. Romulo had flown 12,000 miles in four days from Manila only to have the car carrying him from the airport collide with a taxicab three blocks from the Eastman Theatre in downtown Rochester. He arrived on the commencement platform just as his degree citation was being read.

The list of honorary degree winners is traditionally kept secret by the University right up to the start of Commencement, since a designee does not get his degree if he does not appear at the Commencement ceremony. University officials feel that possible embarrassment is avoided by this procedure.
