No Yard Dean Named; Bender Takes Post Held by Gummere

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Delmar Leighton '19 has been named Dean of Students in the College effective July 1, 1952, Provost Buck announced yesterday. He in effect replaces Wilbur J. Bender '27, present Dean of the College, who will become Dean of Admissions and Financial Aide effective also July 1, 1952, in place of present Director of Admissions Richard M. Gummere.

This announcement substantiates the CRIMSON'S story of October 1, which revealed Bender's appointment and Gummere's retirement.

Leighton is the present Dean of Freshmen. No successor to him has yet been named, although the office will still be continued.

Student Activities

In his new position Leighton will assume responsibility for the regulation of all student activities and for student advising. As Chairman of the Administrative Board he will be in charge of the academic standings and disciplinary problems of the students. He will also work closely with faculty advisors, Hosemasters, the Hygiene Department, the Bureau of Study Council, and the Office of Student Placement in the handling of students' personal problems.

Bender's new post gives him control over the admission of new students and over scholarship aid, loans, and part-time employment. Besides supervising the work of the Financial Aid Center and the Student Employment Office, Bender will coordinate the Committees on Admissions and on Scholarships.

Leighton, instructor in Economics, has been Dean of Freshmen and Chairman of the Board of Freshman Advisors since 1930. He first came to Harvard as assistant dean in 1922, and in the same year received his degree of Master of Business Administration from the Business School.
