Varsity Five Begins Season With 69-43 Win Over M.I.T.

After a wobbly beginning, the varsity basketball team gained a little determination and drive to whip M.I.T. 69 to 43 Saturday at Tech. In its opening game of the year the quintet showed enough depth and scoring potential to prove itself definitely superior to last year's squad.

One good sign as compared with 1950's 60 to 41 win over Tech was that the Crimson scoring was evenly spread out--Gerry Murphy was high man with 14 points. Bill Dennis had 12, Dick Lionette 11, and Bill Hickey 10. Eight other men figured in the scoring.

The Zagineers didn't provide much opposition. Not a particularly strong team to begin with, they were completly tied up by a well-conceived and well-executed Crimson zone defense. On the small playing court Tech was unable to move the ball around enough to penetrate the zone, and most of its scoring was done from the outside.

The Crimson was no whiz-bang outfit itself, especially in the first quarter, but hook shots by Lionette and some accurate popping from the outside by Murphy gave the Crimson a substantial 28 to 19 half-time lead.

M.I.T. forward Len Garthe--high scorer with 15 points--was the only player who gave Tech fans any cause for excitement in the second half. Led by Dennis, who did all the scoring in the last half, the Crimson made a complete rout of the game.

Guard Ed Krinsky played a quick and alert game, as did Hickey, who was handicapped by an arm brace. Sophomores Ed Blodnick and Bob Gremp also showed up well.
