Rezoning Hit by Lutheran Pastor

The City Council yesterday wrangled for an hour over a change of zoning beside the University Lutheran Church and heard testimony against the bill from the Church's pastor, Reverend Edward Stemley. The Council finally voted to refer it back to the Committee on Ordinances.

The proposed change would permit a set of stores starting at Dunster Street, down Winthrop Street, to Boylston. The other side of Winthrop Street, by the Military Science Building, could be used as an extension for the present drug store.

Reverend Stemley said that the Church did not object to the extension of the drugstore, but looked at the change from a long term point of view. Pointing out that many stores in the Square had fallen apart or closed up, he said that a large number of stores may later devalue both the church and the Houses. Councillor John J. Foley motioned that the bill be sent back for further study.
