Fifty more selected freshmen will be immediately admitted to the second term of Military Science 1, the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps' first-year course, Colonel Charles P. Summerall, Jr., professor of Military Science and Tactics, announced yesterday.
Vacancies have existed in the unit since September when only 45 freshmen made applications to it. Since the war situation has grown more serious, many draft-conscious students have asked to be admitted. The Army has a staff of 11 men which can adequately handle the larger number of men. The Defense Department will not, however, give draft deferments this year to the newly admitted freshmen.
The new enrollment procedure marks a change from the old policy of not admitting anyone except first-term freshmen into the field artillery unit without previous military experience or prep school R.O.T.C. work.
This opening in the R.O.T.C. unit follows similar action at Yale and Cornell recently. At Ithaca, the Air Force R.O.T.C. began to allow juniors and seniors to enter the advanced course, which normally lasts two years, and to complete it in one term for lieutenants' commissions in the reserves. At the College, no one may enter the R.O.T.C. units except as a freshman.
