Mural Missing on Way to Harkness

Harkness Commons will have another mural in its main dining hall before spring--if it can be found.

Walter Gropius, designer of the Graduate Center, heard last week from Paris that the mural had been completed, but spokesmen for the Paris gallery in which the mural is to be exhibited, claim they don't know where the mural or its creator, Jean Miro, are at present.

Architects Collaberative, Gropius' firm, commissioned Miro to do the painting a year ago. He replied last spring from Barcelona that he had started working on it. Nothing has been heard from Miro since late this fall.

Gropius wrote Henri Matisse in Paris and asked him if he had heard anything from Miro. Matisse answered that he would look for his follow artist, and then nothing more was heard from Matisse.

Desperation

In desperation, Gropius cabled the Paris gallery where Miro had said the work would be shown before being sent to America. Its reply did not indicate how authorities there knew the mural was finished, nor did they know when the mural would be sent to their gallery.

The Miro mural was supposed to have been delivered to the University by January 1.

There is already a mural in the dining hall, created by George Bayer.
