Members of Faculty Laud Burbank's Work In Aiding Department

"Professor Burbank built up the most outstanding economics department in the country," said Seymour E. Harris '20, professor of Economics, before attending the funeral services for his friend yesterday afternoon. He was speaking of the late Harold Hitchings Burbank, David A. Wells Professor of Economics, who died last Tuesday.

John D. Black, Henry Lee Professor of Economics, added that Burbank had given the department "a more sincere effort than we could imagine" while he was chairman. Black felt that Burbank was the main factor in "making the department as strong as it now is."

Other faculty members in the School of Public Administration, joined in paying tribute to their friend and colleague. Arthur Smithies, professor of Economics, John K. Galbraith, professor of Economics, and Sumner H. Slichter, Lamont University Professor, agreed that Burbank contributed more to the teaching of economics in his 38 years with the University "than had been done until then." Burbank was one of the founders of the tutorial system.
