U.S. Must Aid Europe, New Republic Editor Tells H.L.U. Audience

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Michael Straight (above), editor of the New Republic, said at an H.L.U. forum at Littauer yesterday that the United States must above all support Europe if Russian aggression is to be stopped. He called the Soviet Union "a self-perpetuating dictatorship that must expand."

The Western European nations need military aid, he said, while Asian countries must be encouraged to strengthen nationalism and their governments. Straight especially criticized American policy in India.

He recommended that the United States begin to help India in a spirit of philanthropy rather than one of policy. India does not yet understand democracy and must be helped to do so lest Reds gain control, Straight added.
