Greater Depth Gives Eli Mat Team Victory

Three varsity wrestlers acquired 13 points against Yale in New Haven on Saturday, but then the Crimson fell before superior Eli depth. The final score was 17 to 13; the freshmen also lost, 19 to 9.

Johnny Lee and Dave Smith completed undefeated seasons with pins--Lee on a cradle at 7:45 and Smith with a body press at 1:15. Icke Iben then gave his beat performance of the year by decisioning Don Teare, the man who pinned him here last year, 7 to 1.

After that, it was all Yale. But Adams, Joe Hubbard, Neil Hastie, and Charlie Keith were decisioned; Al Sawyer was pinned by Yale's acting captain with a reverse nelson at 2:58. Yale heavy-weight Jack Downey was simply too big for Keith, while Hubbard did well in holding George Graveson to a 6-0 decision.

The varsity ended its first season under Bob Pickett with four wins and four losses. The Crimson will send a delegation to Penn State this weekend for the eastern intercollegiates.

In the freshman match, Crimson captain Chick Chandler suffered his only setback of the season. He was decisioned by Downey's brother, Bill, 6-1. Oakleigh Thorne (123), Frank Lombardi (130) and George Bates (unlimited) gained Harvard's points. Jack Pollard and Phil Waring were decisioned; Myles Cunningham and Dick Mortimer were pinned.
