Kirkland and Lowell opened the House Softball League with victories over Winthrop and Eliot yesterday. The Deacons edged the Puritans, 10 to 6, with a Winthrop six-run rally in the ninth failing to tie the score. The Bellboys took the Elephants, 16 to 9.
As the hardball league continued, Eliot turned the tables on Lowell to win an 11 to 0 shutout. Kirkland retained its supremacy over Winthrop by handing it a 6 to 0 defeat, with Deacon pitcher Jim Gabler hurling a two hitter.
