'Fifties Row Elis, Tigers Tomorrow

All three of Bert Haines' 150-pound crews carry undefeated records into tomorrow's regatta against Yale and Princeton for the Goldthwaite Cup, but whether or not they will come out still unbeaten is questionable. The varsity fifties race over the mile and five-sixteenths distance on the Charles at 4 p.m., the jayvees at 3:30 p.m., and the freshmen at 3 p.m.

Yale's varsity, holder of the Cup, is the favored boat. The Elis boast of Victories over M.I.T., Penn, and Columbia, while Harvard has defeated M.I.T. twice and Dartmouth once. Yale's margin of victory over the Engineers three weeks ago was four seconds, however, compared to the Crimson's one second win last Saturday. The Tigers have also defeated Penn.

Thursday's time trial decided which Crimson boat would be the varsity and which would be the jayvee 'fifties. Up until that time, Haines said, the two shells were very close, and he was undecided which one would be the first boat. Two veteran oarsmen from last year's varsity are in the first shell, Sam Allen at two, and Ted Barrett at three. Bill Chadwick, last year's captain, is coxing the varsity again.

The freshmen, with victories over M.I.T. (twice) and Tabor under their belts, are what Haines terms "a better than average crew." Yale is again slightly favored in this race.
