Fire, Water Incite Freshman Riot

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Starting with a few cries of Rhinehart, a freshman riot broke out in the Yard early last night. A few minutes afterwards 200 freshmen assembled in the Yard, with many more adding to the commotion from their windows.

Many of the freshmen in the Yard said that someone had come to their rooms and told them that a riot would start at that time.

But the riot never reached full force. Yards cops arrived in time to put out a fire started with kerosene by one of the rioters (Sergeant Toomey pictured above).

Buckets of water and firecrackers thrown from the windows climaxed the relatively "quiet" riot. "Old Rhineharts never die" sung by all, concluded the riot.

"Their bark is louder than their bite," one Yard cop said. "I heard the fire-crackers all the way over on Francis Avenue, near Somerville." He added "the proctors are the ones who should get in trouble for not trying to quell the riot, and not students."
