Stuffy McInnis is not yet sure who will be his starting pitcher today when the Crimson meets Army at 3 p.m. on Soldiers Field. "Probably either Bob Ward, Spider Webb, or John Donelan will start," the coach confides. Ward, Webb, and Donelan are virtually McInnis entire pitching staff.
The fact, however, that Stuffy would consider opening with Ward, who has had just three days' rest, shows the importance the coach attaches to the West Point contest. The sophomore righthander pitched a pair of two-hitters this season before being relatively ineffective against Brown's powerful southpaw batsmen last Wednesday. It is still probable, however, that Donelan will take his regular Saturday starting turn.
Not So Hot
The usually strong Army team has an unimpressive five-eight-one record this year, although this is an improvement over the two wins and four losses of the Crimson.
The Cadets are starting Jim Jones, a righty, and have, according to records, only right-handed relief pitchers. Football quarterback Bobby Blaik will be at first base for the Cadets, and Tom Fitzpatrick (.357 last season) is a strong cleanup batter.
At the same time as the varsity contest, the '54 baseball team will take on a strong Northeastern freshman squad on the Soldiers Field Freshman Diamond.
