Mixed Doubles Carded as Singles Contests Reach Quarter Finalists

Men's tennis singles stayed at a high competitive pitch this week as top-seeded John Rauh eked out a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 conquest over Kenneth "Tug" Wilson, and then beat Matt Reynolds 6-2, 6-2, to move into the quarter finals.

Perhaps some of the best tennis of the entire tournament was unveiled in the Rauh-Wilson battle, even though in the opening rounds. Tall, rangy Wilson had the reach on his opponent, and dealt long forehands with deadly accuracy at the backcourt of Rauh. Rauh, however, refused to be shaken, and doggedly broke through service several times to overpower his slowly tiring foe.

Frank Goodman also entered the quarter finals by narrowly defeating Steve Sonnabend 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Others in the quarter finals are Mike Levinson, Donald Stout, Dick Hatton, Chase Peterson, Gunther Ruff, and the winner of the Xenakis-Galphin match, yet to be determined.

The semi-finals matches will be played Friday and Monday on courts 1 and 2 at hours to be posted in the Union before noon tomorrow. The finals have been tentatively set for Tuesday at 3 p.m. on Soldiers Field Court Number One.
