Job Holders Get Scholarship Encouragement, Alumni Aid

Undergraduates working in the college's employment plan received a boost yesterday when the Financial Aid Center and the Student Employment Office mailed out a letter telling of opportunities for scholarships next year and also describing summer and next year's prospects for jobs.

The letter, mailed jointly by John U Monre '34, director of the Financial Aid Center, and Graham R. Taylor '49, Director of Student Employment, emphasizes that the scholarship committee is "very much interested in students who certify their financial need by a willingness to work steadily." It advises students to apply for stipends.

Taylor said last night that "the whole picture, class standing and activities" was still the determining factor, but that "all other things being equal, the edge would go to the job holder."

The letter asked students to let the Bureaus know on working plans for next year. It stated that it wanted to be able to assure all applicants of good jobs next year. It referred to the fact that many Harvard Clubs try to find jobs for local undergraduates during the summer. The Bureaus offered to provide "Harvard Club contacts wherever possible."

The letter stated that a great deal depended on the way the jobs were dose during Reading and Exam Periods and invited student schedule conferences.
