BRADFORD'S MESS

To the Editors of the CRIMSON:

I know that the Miriam Van Waters incident occurred before the present Board of Editors of the CRIMSON were in college, but it really seems to me that they should be more careful of the facts before condemning Governor Dever.

Your editorial says that Governor Dever "whimpered" that he couldn't do anything when his Commissioner of Correction took action to remove Dr. Van Waters from office.

The most casual check would disclose that the Commissioner was not Governor Dever's, but Governor Bradford's Commissioner; that Governor Bradford was the one who "whimpered" he couldn't do anything; that Governor Dever inherited Bradford's "mess" and immediately enlisted the services of Dean Griswold of Harvard Law School as chairman of a distinguished commission to do something; that as a result of the hearings conducted by Dean Griswold, Governor Dever retained Dr. Van Waters; and further, that within the last month when Dr. Van Waters reached the retirement age, the Commissioner of Correction, this time Governor Dever's commissioner, especially extended Dr. Van Waters' term of office with the obvious approval of the Governor.

If this is a measure of the accuracy of the CRIMSON, the editors' faces should be--crimson. Stanley E. Tobin '53   President, The Harvard Young Democratic Club
