While nation-wide student enrollment rose for the first time since 1949, the number of Harvard undergraduates decreased this year, Registrar Sargent Kennedy '28 said yesterday.

The College's November enrollment showed 4,416 undergraduates against, 4,498 last year. This is approaching Provost Buck's optimum enrollment of 4,300 men.

Commenting on reports gathered from 1,800 educational institutions, McGrath said: "Although the increase is relatively slight, 1.5 percent above 1951, there is a decided upsurge in the number of students enrolling for the first time. Part of the rise in the number of college freshmen can be attributed to the larger number of high school graduates last June."
